Nuclear Stress Tests for Angina and Shortness of Breath
Nuclear Stress Testing is one of the most common testing procedures offered to assist with diagnosing whether or not a patient may have Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and to assist with treatment if you have been diagnosed with a heart condition. Millions of individuals experience angina (chest pain) and shortness of breath every year. There are several causes for these symptoms. However, the presence of these alarming symptoms may be caused by narrowed arteries, which may lead to a blocked coronary artery or heart attack. It is important to determine the cause of these symptoms.
Stress testing is used to measure the flow of blood to your heart while at rest and while working harder. Two sets of images will be taken to view the functionality of your blood vessels. You will be asked to work your heart muscle via exercise (when it demands more blood flow). This will cause the heart muscle to dilate.
If exercise is not possible, a medication can be injected to simulate the effects of exercise on your heart. A specialized camera will be used to view the images to determine whether or not enough blood is being supplied to your heart muscle. No caffeine 12 hours prior to your scheduled test (to include decaf beverage and chocolate consumption).
